A middle school student tests a self-built mobile app on a tablet while block code fills the laptop screen beside them.

Pocket Apps Studio

Grades 6-8 · 3 units · 12 weeks · 60 45-minute periods · 45 hours of instruction

Pocket Apps Studio treats every student as the founder of a tiny software studio. The course opens with the question of what apps do to people and communities, for better and worse, then moves quickly into making: students plan program logic with flowcharts, lay out multi-screen interfaces, and wire buttons and gestures to event-handling code they test live on a device or emulator.

As their apps grow, so does their computer science. Variables, hand-traced logic tables, loops, custom procedure blocks, and lists arrive exactly when projects demand them, and students learn to refactor repetitive code and debug with a reproduce-isolate-fix routine instead of guesswork. A dedicated data unit has them building apps around real datasets, from illness tracking dashboards to personal fitness records that persist between sessions.

The studio ends with a shipped product: teams interview real people, scope a genuine neighborhood or school problem, define requirements, build and user-test a polished app, and pitch it to an outside audience with a live demo.
